Before you reach for the paracetamol, try one of these simple techniques to help see off an everyday headache.
Sort a throbbing head with Acupressure
Press your thumb and first finger together in the natural dip at the base of the opposite thumb and first finger. If it feels sore, you’ve hit the right spot. Hot for a while until the pain in your head starts to clear. When the pain is severe, try breathing deeply in through your nose and out through your mouth, filling your abdomen as you inhale. Count five in, ten out. Repeat for about a minute.
Ease a tight, stress headache with massage
When you get a real nagging pain at the base of your skull, dip your head forward, linking your fingers behind your head and then dropping your head back into your hands. Hold for a count of ten, then lift. Repeat until you feel relief. The classic Lion yoga move can also help a tension headache. Inhale deeply through your nose, open your mouth wide and stick out your tongue, curling the lip down. Open your eyes wide, breathe out through your mouth with a sigh. Repeat.
Relieve a mild headache with aromatherapy
Lavender can be either inhaled or applied topically. Use two to four drops for every two to many medicinal oils, this home remedy can also be safely applied externally without the need to dilute it. But never take orally. Or try peppermint oil, which helps improve blood flow – sniff to help open up the sinuses so that more oxygen can get into the bloodstream.
Some headaches are caused by inflammation, which can be reduced by eating omega-3 fatty acids. Flaxseed, as an oil, whole seeds or ground, is rich in omega-3s.
